SIZE GUIDE

When selecting the right size for a vintage Chanel jacket, it's important to consider the fit and the brand's characteristic features

  • Most Chanel jackets have a slightly tighter fit, particularly around the shoulders, chest, and upper arms. It is never smart to size down with Chanel jackets, as you will not be able to lift your arms properly, nor be able to move around comfortably.

  • Purchasing a Chanel jacket that is precisely your size may limit you to wearing only a sleeveless top underneath. If you like to have the option to wear the jacket with a t-shirt underneath, it's wise to opt for at least half to a full size larger, especially for the classic collarless four-pocket model.

  • Just to be clear, it is not necessary to size up half a size or a whole size. It depends on your preferred fit. If you are someone who likes a very tailored cut, simply take your regular size. However, if you prefer to have slightly more space, then it is advised to go up half a size, or a whole size.

  • Sizing up more than one size is not advisable with the classic collarless four-pocket model though, as it may appear excessively oversized and lose its elegant appeal. However, for blazers or jackets with a slightly boxy or oversized fit due to drop shoulders, opting for a larger size can enhance the overall look.

  • Chanel jackets are sized according to French sizing standards. Vintage Chanel jackets may not always correspond accurately to the size mentioned on the label. Mostly, we see that vintage Chanel jackets, especially those from the 90s, tend to fit half a size smaller than the label size. Avoid being misled by solely relying on the label size matching your own size.

  • It's crucial to examine the measurements of the jacket you're interested in and compare them to your own measurements and size.

  • The best way to take your own measurements, is to measure a well-fitting jacket you already own. For easy measuring, ensure it is a jacket that has regular seams at the end of each shoulder. Here's a guideline for measuring a jacket:

  1. Place your jacket on a flat and clean surface.

  2. Shoulders: Measure the shoulder width of a jacket that has tailored shoulders with a clear shoulder seam at the end of each shoulder. Measure from one end of the shoulder seam to the other shoulder seam. Typically, a size 36 will measure 36 cm from seam to seam, for instance, a size 38 will measure 38 cm, and a size 40 will be 40 cm, and so on.

  3. Chest/bust: Lift the sleeves slightly up, so you can easily access the armpits. Measure from one armpit to the other armpit. As a reference, a size 38 usually measures around 48 cm at the chest. A size 40 will be approximately 50 cm, and so on. Thus, the chest measurements are approximately 10 centimeters larger than the shoulder width.

  4. Length: Measure the length at the front and the back of the jacket from the top to the bottom to see if the jacket has your preferred length.

The majority of the jackets are hip-length, but there are so many different styles and types. There are also cropped jackets, or jackets that are longer than average. Look for a silhouette that suits you.

  5. Sleeves: Measure the sleeves of the jacket to see if you like the length. On most Chanel jackets, the sleeves finish above the wrist, as Coco Chanel preferred to leave some space of the skin clear to showcase jewellery. The sleeves are therefore designed to be somewhat shorter. If you are a bit taller, it's best to search for jackets with slightly longer sleeves, around 60 cm or more

  • Even after comparing measurements, it's essential to read the description of the jacket's fit. Sometimes, a jacket may fit larger or smaller than the measurements suggest. Factor this information into your decision-making process to determine if the jacket has an ideal fit for you.

  • Be honest with yourself. Sometimes, you may fall in love with a particular piece because it looks so good on the hanger or when seen on someone else, it must have the perfect fit for you to feel beautiful and confident in it. If you suspect the jacket will be too small, don't go for it, as you will not be able to move comfortably in it. Wait for the right one to come along. It's our belief that it's also crucial to opt for a color and style that you know you'll enjoy wearing. There are always certain styles in which you feel more beautiful than others. You will derive most pleasure from a jacket that is the perfect style, and that fits you like a glove.

  • kern-1.com is based in the Netherlands and uses EU/German sizing. When mentioning sizes of available jackets, we refer to what we call EU sizing. EU sizes are one size smaller than French sizes. So a 36 EU will be a 38 FR, for instance. Below, we've included a size guide with European sizes, French sizes, American sizes, UK sizing, and Italian sizes for women's clothing.

  • In order to determine the actual size of a jacket, we measure it, try it on, and compare it to the label size, if the label is still present. Then we determine the 'actual' size, this is the size that is mentioned on the website, together with the measurements of each piece.

  • For effortless movement and easy tailoring, the exterior and the interior of a Chanel jacket are constructed of multiple panels. Due to their construction, most Chanel jackets can be sized up or down one or two sizes. Below the lining, at every seam, there is a bit of extra fabric that can be taken out to create more space if needed.

  • Please note that every Chanel jacket is unique. While this alteration may be possible with the majority of Chanel jackets, there are also instances of unlined jackets without extra fabric at the seams .

By considering these factors and taking the necessary steps to ensure the right fit, you can find a Chanel jacket that not only complements your style but also fits you impeccably, enhancing your confidence and comfort.
