AUCTION CHANEL 1996 SPRING/SUMMER RUNWAY JACKET LOOK 28 WORN BY MICHELE HICKS
After selling vintage Chanel for over 10 years and seeing more than 2000 Chanel jackets, this is one stopped me in my tracks. It is a collarless cream tweed jacket from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1996 collection, worn on the runway by model Michele Hicks for Look 28. I have not seen a jacket like this before, with the original label is still inside, mentioning the look number and the name of the model. The jacket is untouched and exactly the way it was worn almost 30 years ago on the runway.
The jacket’s exterior looks like new, and the inside is also very neat, yet it has signs of wear in the lining like light patinated stains in the armpits and a small part of the inside hem that’s come unstitched. The model’s name label was clearly sewn in quickly, in a way that’s much less precise than you would expect from Chanel, but that just add to the charm of this piece, I imagine it being done quickly before the runway show. Normally, we would take a label like this out and reattach it neatly, but in this case we left it exactly as it came to us, to perserve the original condition of this archival piece.
The jacket has a classic tailored cut, a collarless neckline, and features two breast pockets. The buttons at center front for fastening, and at the cuffs, are silver-tone CC-logo coins, subtle, yet striking against the soft cream tweed. The top button differs from the rest, and features Coco Chanel. The jacket is very 90s Chanel, and an outstanding piece on its own, but what makes it rare is the history it carries.
